As a man who's been married for 6 or 7 hundred years, there's something humorously symbolic about losing an appendage due to marital tradition. It's a good thing there's not a testical ring tradition... Or is there?

Just another of the many reasons not to waste money on useless gewgaws. Rings also make it more difficult to properly clean your hands (it is so easy for dirt to collect around and under the ring). And, when handling things, you can scratch them with your ring. And jewelry is uncomfortable (I know, some of you get used to it, but you didn't start wearing it to be more comfortable). As for wedding rings, I could write of them being symbols for designating property, but I'll leave that for another time.

Basically, there are no good reasons for jewelry (I exclude from this things like watches, which have an actual function). But people are silly about so many things, why not do something potentially dangerous for the sake of their vanity?

One of our juvenile court judges was up on a ladder working on his gutters when he got his ring hooked onto a nail, at the same time he lost his balance...his finger stayed with the gutter while the rest of him landed on the ground. Docs were able to reattach it, but while it's all bandaged up it is permanently erect. Almost looks like he's flipping everyone off, which is totally appropriate in juvenile court.

Dude, that's got to attract attention. Are they on a necklace or something?

(Apologies for the gratuitous use of the word "dude.")

She said that one of her Doctors told her that this is more common than people might think. He showed her his own wedding ring which had a tiny cut through the metal. He said that cut would prevent such injuries as it would cause the ring to break before permanent damage to the finger could occur. She and her husband both have those little cuts in their rings now.
You know, that was exact thought I had when I read that initial post?
