"After Forever", Black Sabbath. Seriously. I used to love quoting this to teachers at the Catholic school I attended, without mentioning which band it was by... just a "religious rock band". Never, ever, ever failed to produce shocked intakes of breath when the name of the band was uttered. I miss those innocent days...

There's an obscure, out of print album called "The Great Nostalgia" from former Frank Zappa bandmember Bob Harris that has a great "religious song." It is called "Home." Here's what I remember of the lyrics:
Home, and the way back to you I believed would be Just like a game of pool. And if I'd learn all the angles, I would have God by the ankles I believed my mind would steer me, And so with my billiard theory, I set out with cue stick in my hand... Alone For the self-made incantation, That would surely take me home. And my life's endeavor, Was to become so clever And learn the combination to Your door But in all my learning, Thinking...Heaven's lock that I was turning Now the only thing I've learned Is that I am a fool. No one sees Your face, Except by Your Grace And mercy is the password to Your land But mercy is the one thing that the human mind will never understand The gift of love is not from learning known, Its shown. I'm crying tears From deep inside. I'm crying tears today From different eyes. 'Cause today I see that I was wrong And all along my love was just for me, And never really You I'm crying tears of a truly happy man Though God we both know, I haven't been your biggest fan But in spite of time I've wasted, And all the world I've tasted, Only by Your mercy do I see... There's still hope, There's still hope, For me... The music is sparse, with just a few keyboards and horns. Yet he changes keys and climbs into his upper vocal registers in a way that makes it seem as if he's climbing a ladder vocally. Even though I don't believe in God, this song always moves me.
