Hey, I even live in Virginia where, starting this school year, schools are required to post up "In God We Trust" signs.
Me too, I'll be a sophmore. Im thinking we need more theists if we are to be taken as anything more then "self-described" atheists who are trying to corupt this great Godly Country of Freedom and bring it to Comunism. We need a group who's title is not as surounded by a cloak of myth, assumption, and bigotry.

Somebody like 4th Generation Atheist, for example, would be the right kind of person. Not someone just trying to get his name in the news.
For some reason I'm thinking he doesnt look like the type of person to do this case just for the media atention. If he did not bring the daughter into this the ruling most likely would never have been made.

I find it highly unlikely that any other court will uphold this. I have heard it said that all members of the Supreme Court, in particular the more liberal members, are scared to give Congress an issue that they can get amendment through with. The amendment might end up being very broad. School prayer, 10 commandments, etc. The religious liberty amendment. All forms of public religious display are allowed ... Don't want to go there!!!

The use of "acknowledged" simply acknowledges the fact that atheists are a stigmatized social group, like terrorists, gays and homeless people. It takes personal courage to make one's non-belief a matter of public record. Methodists and Catholics have a socially-approved belief system. There is no reason for them to be reluctant to talk about it in public. There are many people in this forum who are not "acknowledged atheists", but they are atheists nonetheless.

I don't agree with "terrorists" being in that list. The point of being "stigmatized" is that one is not committing a crime, but is treated as though one is. Homosexuality, homelessness and atheism are not crimes. Terrorism is, and thus one might as well say that rapists, murderers and armed robbers are "stigmatized" as well.

Aren't they? My point was not to say that any group ought to be stigmatized, just that it is a fact that it is. The use of "acknowledged atheist" is offensive to me, too, but it is an honest use of the expression. If it weren't true, then there wouldn't be so many of us who are "in the closet" outside of forums like this. And we agree that atheists, homeless people, and homosexuals don't deserve to be stigmatized. Terrorists, rapists, and murders deserve to be stigmatized. To me, Newdow is a hero--someone with the courage and drive to be an "acknowledged atheist" in a big way.
