There is some truth in this, actually. I analysed Bush' speech on the eve of war (comparing it to Blair's 97 electoral victory speech) for an English Language assignment, and there is a marked change in him on different topics. When he is aware of what he's talking about (when he's talking about freedom, war, brave troops etc) he is a passable public speaker. When he isn't however, (in the speech when he was talking about the deadline for Saddam to leave the country), he is completely unaware of what words he should emphasize and so the speech sounds extremely stilted, a bit like he's reading a translation. This leads me to conclude that when he talks about something like the economy, he really has no grasp of the issues and therefore has no confidence that he is speaking correctly. When he does understand, he appears very different, and I suspect he would be like that if you knew him as a friend (vomit does indeed now coat my keyboard.)

For the record, Blair is the most fantastic public speaker I have ever seen - you simply will not see anyone more persuasive or confidant. He makes me smile even when his actual politics make me want to puke

What Bush is really thinking during his Keynote Speeches. A very well done splicing of one of his speeches.

Well, the spin machines are in full swing. CNN today called what the president said 'tough talk against Iraqi militants.'

Apparently he's really tough to say that while sitting safe behind those great stone walls.

I can't imagine it would be easy. A war has to be a pretty surreal experience at the very least. It probably triggers some drastic emotions and mental processes that wear deep into the brain.

Its basically severe emotional trauma like a shattered leg bone is physical trauma.

If this short stay on the "giving" rather than the "receiving" end of the attack is messing with this soldier's psychology, imagine, then, the emotional trauma of being a citizen of the target country of this powerful military machine for over 12 years with a finale like this at the end.

See the problem is that not enough people died in that fucking war. We need to sacrifice some more of our young men and women (and a whole lot more of their men, women and children) before we can get a real charge off.

One of the way to view war is as ritual sacrifice of the young to assuage our guilt. We just didn't kill enough of the little bastards. Better invade Iran. Then we'll really have some fun.

Here's a great editorial to Bush's remark.

Yes. It reminds me of the debate in which he was responding to a question about racism.

He looked positively deranged as he described the sure execution awaiting anybody such as the murderers in the James Byrd case.
