Re: The real, honest to God Biggest Problem for Atheism!
Quote:
I'm an atheist, and I'm okay. I sleep all night and I work all day. I chop logic. I eat fundy's lunch. I go to the lavatory. On Wednesdays I go shoppin, and have kitten pie for tea. I chop logic. I skip and jump. I like to press wild flowers. I take off people's clothing And hang around in bars. etc etc. Amazing Grace - bah! cheers, Michael |

I know my (Christian) family did - they were falling over laughing when I sang this song last Christmas. |

GPLindsey-- I agree that most atheists do not have that sense of community that many church-goers do. This does indeed force us to seek solace elsewhere. You must consider though that there are many different sorts of communites-- there is your work, your family, sports you may participate in, book clubs, wine tastings and volunteering to name a few. Being an atheist forces us to seek out others on a different basis to seek solace and friendship. It is a basis built on shared hobbies, intellectualism, sports or other interests.

Can atheists not believe in mystical things at all? My understanding was that Buddhists are atheists, even though they are religious. I thought it meant ONLY not believing in a deity.
AACK. Obviously I meant to say "Being an atheist does NOT limit one to a dull, meaningless, hopeless deterministic life." Yes, an atheist can be a mystic. "Atheist" merely implies lacking belief in god(s). |

quote from post zero : When a father gets a phone call that his son was hit by a car after a soccer practice and is gone, what comfort does atheism offer?
It lets you express yourself freely, if you wish to punch a 2x4 snapping it in half, you can do so, or if you want to beat the living crap out of the driver, you can, and no divine interjection will stop it, however, the law will if you'Re going to assault someone :P As for waking up on a Sunday, why wake up ? Enjoy the sleep while you can get it :P |

I'd go out and search for that reckless driver...and make him pay for what he had done. We find true comfort in justice....religion only offers cosmetics solution while the wounds fester inside. |

Atheism is not a picnic.
You want to be comforted...stop being an atheist. |

The songs are hilarious!

Also, folks, if you just really need a good church sort of feeling once in a while, I suggest going to an African Methodist church. Those are the coolest churches on the planet. The congregation will be so busy singin' and dancin' their hearts out in praise they won't even notice you don't belong there. it's full of love and soul and fellowship, and while you're there, the sermons even kind of make sense. Plus, you can totally get a natural high and work up a sweat dancing with them - better than the average night club. |
