http://www.bulfinch.org/fables/bull29.html I see that both Circe and Calypso helped Odysseus on his journey, and he is likely to have failed without their help. Having sex with them may have enabled him to get home to his wife. Had he refused, it is likely that they would not have been as inclined to see that he was not killed by the Sirens (Circe helped him in dealing with them) or have had a raft with ample provisions to sail home (Calypso helped with that). These affairs were not simply flings for the fun of it, but were a part of doing what needed to be done in order to return home. And, again, Odysseus never promised his wife Penelope that he would not have sex with others anyway. I see that my memory of The Odyssey is accurate. |
