Well, how about "not the widely presumed socially acceptable" definition? I need to quit reading fashion magazines. If I read another magazine dissing Madonna for her toned arms, I may never get around to the weight training I need to strengthen my joints. Thanks Dave

Aw, come on! This just hits a nerve, because I used to get that shit just about every day. I distinctly remember sitting outside at school one day with a bag of candy orange slices, and an overweight student and the overweight lunch lady were talking loudly about how I was going to go throw that up later. Right in front of me! For the record, I have NEVER vomited by choice. I hate vomiting. And it is no more appropriate to make comments like that about a skinny person than it is about a fat person.

At least when people said it directly to me, I could clear it up. I once sat in a Taco Bell for a really long time just to show people that I wasn't going to throw up my lunch.

Fuck that shit. Some people are skinny. They just are. I ate enormous quantities of food all the time, often just to pack on the fat and calories, and couldn't really gain much no matter what I did. Maybe I burned a bunch of them. I walked everywhere, and I was just plain high strung, too, so I did a lot of pacing, foot jiggling, and various fidgeting.

Maybe she ate more than usual that day. Maybe she burns it off in funny ways. Maybe she has a crazy metabolism. Probably some combination of the three. But it's just not fair to say that kind of thing about people without having more substantial evidence.

For example, yesterday she had two nacho grande things from TacoBell (something like 1,100 calories in each) plus two soft-shell tacos. Then she had a Big Mac supersize meal from McDonalds with extra "Mac" sauce. Then a can of cheese ravioli from Chef Boyardee, plus four 20 ounce Mt Dew drinks. She ended up with a bag of smoked almonds from the vending machine at 9pm last night.
... well, we've proved she has no tastebuds, if nothing else. Be thankful Bree, you appreciate food, you dont scoff crap down like a duck-like creature.

ick.

dont be jealous, she'll probably have a heart attack or balloon from malnutrition or something.

Lisarea, you are absolutely right, and I should really know better. I deal with topics like this on a daily basis on the weight-loss support board I belong to, and I don't stand for this kind of behavior there. Yet here, I participate in it? Forgive me, I completely lost my head. I think it was liv who was talking about the "psyche-rape" people commit on others when they do their little five-cent psychoanalysis on people they don't know or have just met. Sometimes we like to come on here and vent frustrations, and we forget it's real human beings we're talking about.

Huh? I heard at Lausanne's Olympic Museum (the official IOC museum) that cyclists on the Tour de France couldn't consume more than 7,000 kCal per day. The reason for having rest days was that they spent about 8,000 kCal per day, and needed these days to replenish their supplies.

lisarea,

I'm sorry if my post came off wrong - I certainly didn't mean to imply that it's not POSSIBLE that she just has one of those ultra-fast metabolisms (my own sister is one of those who never cracked 100 lbs. until she got pregnant and having had 2 kids in rapid succession is now back to about 105.) And I would *never* "make fun" of a skinny person any more than I would make fun of a fat person. I guess I was projecting somewhat in that I have known several women (including myself) who have struggled with the kind of disordered eating that I mentioned - and always maintained a normal body weight and nobody ever knew . So I guess my only point was that it's quite possible for someone to be a "purging type" with no-one being the wiser. But I certainly know that some people have unusually fast metabolisms and it can be just as difficult and frustrating for them to GAIN weight as it is for some to lose.

So anyway, I didn't mean any offense and sorry if I came off that way.

Lauri, et al,

Sorry if I came off prickly. That's just a hot-button issue for me, and I get all traumatized and Lifetime movie about it. I think I understand that there's no ill intent to your questions, and in many cases, there could be a valid concern.

For future reference, an incomplete list of other 'hot button topics' follows:

Michael Douglas
Styrofoam
The band Chicago, and all 'supergroups' of the 70s
Flourescent lighting
Cultural remnants of Tony Orlando and Dawn
Oprah Winfrey
Manufactured collectibles
Pointy shoes

Thank you all in advance for avoiding these topics in future public communications.

I thought Douglas did a great job in "Wonderboys".
