I recommend you find and read the Atheist Testimony topic, but I'll give my thumbnail answer:

Intellectually: lack of a solid rational case for god-belief

Emotionally: I'm happy as an atheist, so I don't even feel any need for god-belief

That depends on whether or not one is planning on a cryonic suspension.

Aside from amazing technological intervention, death is the end. No afterlife. No existence as a conscious entity. It would be as it was before you came into being as a conscious, living entity.

Where were you 200 years ago? You didn't exist yet, right? It would be like that.

I created this thread simply for answer, not to start a discussion. You can find comments on my beliefs in several other threads.

I see no reason to believe in a god or an afterlife.

C'mon, Tarnaak. In the OP, you seemed to express that you hadn't heard an (satisfactory) answer as to why someone would be an atheist. The least you could do is to respond to some of the answers you received, tell us what you think of them, if they're satisfactory. That's generally considered good discussion board etiquette.

I started this Thread expecting quite a different response. Obviously I was wrong to expect that. This thread pretty much reads the same as the other threads relative to this...

Tarnaak,

Because I have not seen a proof of the existence of a god.

I do not believe in the existence of life after death.

I used to be a christian, but I questioned everything, and the questions can't be answered. That was reason #1, but I'm here, so I still like to learn more.

I'm curious as to what you were expecting. Perhaps more wailing and gnashing of teeth at our perceived unhappy predicament of not believing, or delight at our "freedom" from morality, instead of simple, rational, straight-forward responses from people comfortable with themselves?

So Tarnaak:
1. What -did- you expect for reasons people were atheist and
2. Why are these answers unsatisfactory and
3. perhaps you'd like to answer my similar question here. Thanks.
