So, any smiths or wannabe smiths out there?

I have been playing at the forge for a couple of years now. i don't consider myself a smith yet, but I can pound out useful impliments, swords, daggers, and such. Working in a warhammer right now. It's pretty tough to work metal that thick!

My favorite was a Bowie knife I made out of a railroad spike for my uncle. He is a knife collector, and a railroad buff. He loved it so much he mounted it in a display case.
I shaped a stunted bowie out of the shaft of the spike, while leaving the head and a small part of the shaft intact. This I embedded in a wooden handle so that it showed through. While not likely to stand up to heavy use/abuse in a practical way, it made for a nice showpiece.

So, what are you working at right now? What piece have you made that you are most proud of?

My father used to work at a plant that made sledgehammers for Craftsman (among other brands), but I doubt that's what you're referring to.

I can silversmith, which is not as intense. I used to cast bronze and silver as well, which was much hotter and dirtier than simple silversmithing. But that's about as close as I get to what you've been doing.

I made a cross pendant when I was about 15 which I was really proud of. I still weat it in fact, even though it has no meaning whatsoever.

These days it serves a more prosaic purpose than worship, since it serves to open soda cans when I can't get my big fingers under the tab.

My father is a farrier, actually (more commonly and incorrectly referred to as a "blacksmith") and as such deals mainly with horseshoes. However, from time to time, he's made other things, including a door, a birdfeeder holder, and a hanger for kitchen items.

I've always wanted to try metal-working. What a fascinating mind-body practice and/or art. The closest I've gotten though is a little whittling which is not quite the same thing.

I used to do bronze casting when I was in college. It was my favorite class. When I have the time (which I've wished for in the last 10 years or so) I would really like to take up bronze casting again.

Back in the '70s, I worked as a farrier, and did ornamental iron in the winter to take up the slack. A good business, until I got my back smashed up by a rough horse.
