...but I suspect that the vast majority of Republicans are appalled by these reconstructionist nutjobs...

No! The vast majority of Conservative Republicans are not appalled. That's the problem. Maybe a few Moderate Republicans will say they are, but they are rationalizing. If they were truly and honestly "appalled," they they would not remain silent and continue to support the Conservative Republican leadership.

I have read some of this gabberloony by the Christian Reconstructionsists on their own page. I heard that they are close to centers of government in a group called the (innocent sounding) Council for National Policy. Pat Robertson, the Late J.R. Rushdoony, Gary North, Jerry Falwell and others. Rushdoony and North were co-founders of the Christian Reconstruction Movement, aimed at replacing the US Constitution with Mosaic Law.

I know that they sound like a fringe group of barmy schizophrenics. But how big is this group? More importantly than formal membership, how influential is this group in the current Right Wing US Government. I suspect Ashcroft is sympathetic if not supportive. I also think that their death penalty for idolators would include Atheists as Blasphemers, who are also listed for termination. Are we seeing the second installation of Hitler's Final Solution methods?

Can anyone tell me if these wankers are a threat for the Nazification of America to wreck the 21st century for the rest of us.

I am hoping that some informed Americans will tell me that they are just a small band of lunatics who refuse to take their medications.

Now for the bad part. What they propose is entirely scriptural. Read it all in their book, the Bible.

For more information, check this archived thread on Reconstructionism.

The best assessment of their political power is still the 1998 article in Reason, Invitation to a Stoning: Gettting Cozy with the Theocrats by Walter Olsen. They are influential and have planted some ideas in the minds of others, and they work hard. But when people realize what Rconstructionists stand for, they run for cover.

Okay, I am officially Creeped Out!

I can think of eleven people that I love or at least care about that would be executed if these freaks were in charge. Not to mention my precious self...

And that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more if I gave it some thought.

And of course there's all the charming and fun folks I've met here.

2000-Summer: Neo-Confederates attempt split of PCA[Presbyterian Church of America]: According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Rev. Steven J. Wilkins, is the "pastor of the Auburn Avenue Presbyterian Church in Monroe, La., and a founder and current board member of the neo-Confederate" League of the South (LOS). The LOS is allegedly attempting to take control of conservative churches in the Southern US -- an act that could lead to a schism within the PCA. Wilkins promotes Christian Reconstructionism. Leaders of the Reconstructionist movement advocate that the "death penalty be used to punish those guilty of 'apostasy (abandonment of the faith), heresy, blasphemy, witchcraft, astrology, adultery, 'sodomy or homosexuality,' incest, striking a parent, incorrigible juvenile delinquency, and in the case of women, 'unchastity before marriage.' Non-capital crimes would be sanctioned with whipping, indentured servitude or slavery." Wilkins has allegedly said that the League's goal is to save America from "paganism" and restore it as "the last bastion of Christendom" (It is not clear to which of the five different meanings of "Paganism" he is referring.) He has allegedly stated that slavery is "perfectly legitimate."

Has anyone done an estimate on how many Americans will be killed following the Reconstructionists' take-over of the country? It must be a hundred million or more. It would make Stalin look like a member of the Mickey Mouse club. I think it would be a good rhetorical device to use against them to say, "the Reconstructionists advocate the slaughter of X million number of Americans". It might make people think twice before supporting them.

Seems almost like some militant Islamists -- these guys have much in common with the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. And the rulers of Iran and Saudi Arabia.

You are so right. An intresting (and scary) read is Karen Armstrong's The Battle for God where she points out the parallels between the radical Islamists, fundamentalist Jewish groups, and fundamentalist Christians. They are all rabidly opposed to, well, modernism and secularism. Er, that's us!
