Try FTP Explorer:

http://www.ftpx.com

It's free for home and educational use. Very simple to use. Nice, clean interface.

Question Aaaaarrrrggghhh!

Sorry, I'm getting a little confused. I understand the concept of ftp, I just don't have the practical experience.

Question 1: Do I need to have access to a server that can hold these big files?

Question 2: Some ftp dowload pages have stuff like this:
FTP Explorer (FTP) 662KB 1.00.10
FTP Explorer (HTTP) 662KB 1.00.10
Login Security DLL 31KB 1.0

It's giving me choices!! I don't know what I want!

Ayup. A FTP client is only the mechanism to put it on the server, not the server itself.

The first two are exactly the same, just have different methods of downloading it. In both cases you should be able to just click on it and download. The bottom one, the login security DLL, well, I presume that's there to replace it in case the one that comes with the explorer gets corrupted. Either that, or it's an upgrade.

Thanks, that's what I thought.

Yeah, I figured all I needed was the first one, so that's what I downloaded.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

An interjection:

You can compress the files without loss with a zip or arj program. This compresses the file into a zip file, and can reduce it's size considerably. When unzipped you have the exact same file you started with.

In photographic terms, it's lossless. There is no photo quality loss, since the photo file it'self is unaltered.

When you compress through graphics compression like JPEG or GIF, you lose quality. This is an entirely different thing.

I knew this about WinZip, and suggested it to him the last time he needed to send me something. I'm not familiar with arj, but am looking into it now. Thanks.

EDIT TO ADD: ARJ software site has a Jesus fish on their site, AND a jesus fish incorporated into their logo!

I use that too. And yes, the out of date reminder is annoying. Is there a way to suppress/stop the reminder?

Only JPEG is lossy GIF is lossless. GIF has patent issues though.

A better format is PNG which is lossless, supports 24 bit truecolor, free, and offers better compression than GIF and a simple zip or arj.

For simplicity, I would second this also. No new software installation required, and all you have to do is just drag the files from your hard drive onto the browser. If you're not uploading a lot of files or if they're not very big, this is the easiest method. Like Hayden said, all you need to know is the domain name and final directory name of your web server, and you're set; just use "ftp://" instead of "http://"

LeapFTP (www.leapware.com)...hands down.

I've tried both WS_FTP and CuteFTP and Leap has by the far the simplest. most logical interface and the niftiest features (eg resets the port to 21 when you change the address)
