Abstinance does no such thing. Don't bag anyone, don't jack off. It's not going to cripple you or anything, physically or mentally.

Really, the question is impossible to decide with the data we have available.

Well from experiments I've performed I can cleary state that as a male if you don't "release" every few days you start to get urges.
I strongly believe that even priests masterbate. This should be enough to satisfy the *urges*. But what it boils down to is this. If your sexual lifestyle (or lack there of) gives you the desire to rape little boys you better change your lifestyle. Nothing is this world should lead to that desire. If it does you a broken toaster and should be thrown out. Every single one of those priests better get freaking locked away or killed just like a normal person would. But I got the feeling that because they're priests they will get off lightly. |

I believe at least one contributing factor of pedophilia in the Catholic Church lies in opportunity. Opportunity is the product of at least three factors: 1) A Priest has good reason to believe his character is above question by his paritioners. 2) Paritioner's children are taught that Priests have an authoritive position within the religious social structure. 3) Partitioner's children are left in the private care of Preists. If A Preist has a sexual attraction to children then the above will provide a perfect environment for the Preist to act on his desires. The environment alone would seem to be enough to produce a higher than average rate of pedophilia. In other words, if you were to remove the preist from the near perfect pedophilic environment would the rate of pedophilia among preists be statistically any different than a population of Preists who were sexually active with adult partners? It might be found that even if preists were allowed to be sexually active with adult partners there would still be a higher than average rate of pedophilia among the preisthood. I forgot to add something to my little chunk of annecdotal rambling above. In five years of Catholic school I encountered a lot of priests from many parishes. I never encountered one that wasn't respectable (There was this grumpy old fart at St. Judes but he was just impatient with youth). The one in my example above that saw homosexuality as God's way of sending him to the clergy was probably the nicest and most rational of the lot (he was pretty liberal as priests go). He was the most accepting of us protestants (I'm a former baptist) that had to go to weekly services with the rest of the student body.

I knew a guy who was chaste and abstinent for a year and had a sweating problem. Since he did not masturbate, his pores started to sweat out his "jiszm." Talk about being backed up, literally! In the case you ever meet anybody who claims to be "chaste" take a whiff.

It seems to strongly indicate that the abstinence practiced by Catholic priests has nothing to do with the rate of pedophilia. The main determining factor in how much pedophilia occurs in the priesthood seems to simply be that all priests are male. The only reason it SEEMS like a great scandal and gets all this press is that priests are SUPPOSED to be better than everyone else. This just shows that they're not. They're just regular folks. Actually I've been in a running shouting match on another board about this. I'd say that the scandal comes more from the fact that the Church shuffled these accused individuals from parish to parish without warning anybody or.... gee... I dunno... calling the cops or something. (Which they were legally obligated to do... when the same sort of thing was happening in secular child care facilities in the 80's people got hauled up in front of congress... but the church gets let off easy.)
