I'm no expert, but it sounds like since your dog is ok now, that it's not that bad. Do call a vet, and for future reference, it would be good to find an animal hospital in your area in case you do have an emergency. You may be able to call your own vet after hours, and an answering service will get in touch with your vet in an emergency. One thing you can do (if you haven't already,) is get your dog vaccinated for Parvo, distemper, etc. Sudden onset, explosive diarrhea (and vomiting, I think,) is a symptom of Parvo and it can kill your dog in a day or two if you don't catch it. Hope he's ok, and I'm sorry if my post was alarming to you.

I don't remember exactly what he's been vaccinated for, but I do know that he is up to date on all the recommended shots, according to what the vet told me(and they have the records of all the shot's he's ever had) last time we were there. I would assume parvo was one of them.

But, yeah, he seems his normal self now, and not off his food at all, so I'm not overly concerned at the moment- it was probably just a temporary thing(a virus, or something, that his system has gotten rid of now) he's picked up somewhere. Oh, and his tail is as dangerous as ever...

Will be ringing the vet shortly, though.

I had that happen last December. My dog was near death. He was saved by extensive intervention by the vet (he had apparently swallowed some synthetic twine a while previous, the knot caused serious infection.)

Oh well, he obviously couldn't help it, poor bugger, so I don't blame him- but I'm still in a fucking foul mood.

would you feel any different if that were your child, or your parent, your best friend?

those close to us need help sometimes. It's part of having family/friends/companions.

I cleaned up the mess and I feel glad that my dog is with me for a few more years.+

For the person who said 'that's a good reason not to have a pet'.... I suspect that is a good reason for *that person* not to have a pet.

My dog has been my companion at home and on the road for years. Helping him when he is ill is a small price to pay.

No, I don't think I would've felt any different. I have had to do similar things for family members in the past(I was a live-in carer for my 90 year old grandmother for the last 18 months or so of her life, and changed quite a few of my son's nappies), and it always pissed me off- something I've often felt guilty about. But it had to be done, and I didn't take my (short-lived)foul mood out on anyone- or my pup.

I'm glad you still have your dog with you, too. I know what kind of a bond we get with them- I've had my pup for over 5 1/2 years, now.

Well, at least you didn't have to help clean the eyelid wound of a young tomcat like I did today.

Yeah, he must have gotten into a fight as rural tomcats are prone to do and lost. his eye is OK, and he can see out of it, so we got lucky.
