How can he say we are here in this country for the freedom it provides, only to tell us we should leave because we don't want "In God We Trust" in our schools?

He said that if people don't support our national motto we should leave! But, the people shouldn't be forced to fit the motto. The motto should fit the people.

We need to return to E Pluribus Unum.

Here is my second letter to mr Melvin.

Mr. Melvin how can you suggest that you are here for the freedoms that this country provides if you are not willing to extend that freedom to the rest of it's citizens. For you to impsose your personal religious views on the rest of us is a violation of our freedoms.

I also noticed while re-reading your letter that you believe the national motto to be In God We Trust. This is not the case. The National Motto is officially E Plubus Unum (from many, one). This is a much more appropriate motto as it represents the numerous segments of our society united in the defense of liberty and freedom for all of it's citizens.

While I respect your personal beliefs I do not share them. I only ask that you respect my beliefs in return.

It's as I've said before...you could kick all the freethinkers in the US (and I guess he wants those who have a religion but oppose "In God We Trust" in schools and government buildings to get out, too?), and tomorrow, a new freethinker would be born right here in the U.S. He/She may not start out as a freethinker, but there have always been those who questioned religion, and there will always be those who question it.

Just to clarify.... I'd been under the impression that 'In God We Trust' had been the national motto since the mid 1950's.... that it had been changed during the McCarthy years...

I could be wrong... I guess if I am that's one less thing for me to be pissed off about.

Both can be considered "national mottos."

"On July 30, 1956 a law was passed stating that "the national motto of the United States is hereby declared to be 'In God we trust'." (70 Stat. 732. 36 U.S. Code 186). The House Judiciary Committee recognized that the phrase E Pluribus Unum had also received wide usage in the United States, and the joint resolution did not repeal or prohibit its use as a national motto. In 1963 the Department of State took the following position: "'In God we trust'" is the motto of the United States. It seems to the Department, nevertheless, that there is ample basis both in history and I law for calling 'E Pluribus Unum' a motto of the United States." The Congress has used both."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, freethinkers... take them up on it. Move to Canada. You'll be appreciated here!

At any rate, you'd be depriving the American government of an awful lot of tax dollars, and you could let them know in no uncertain terms just why they're losing all of that money.

America would probably degenerate to a theocracy and fall from the world stage in no time if that happened though, and as much as I would love to see that happen, it just would not be good for the world when those wackos get full control of the most powerful country in the world.

I cant recommend American thinkers come here just yet, your needed more where you are.

No theocracy with 14 aircraft carriers and a nuclear arsenal would fall from the world stage very quickly. The USSR showed that you can raise a lot of hell for a long time even if your country is ideologically cracked. With the head start that the US has in technology and wealth, it could "coast" for quite a while.
