Milli Vanilli! (OK, maybe not "great songs", but they sure fit the "bad singers" category!)

PS. I'll sell my soul to the first person who can give me the URL to a site which offers the "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" song in Mp3 format.

I'm astonished no-ones mentioned bob dylan yet.

I must say I still like his stuff even though he sounds like he's got a seriously deviated septum

Dammit, I just dropped in to place a vote for anything by Bob Dylan. Contrast Jimi Hendrix's version of "All along the watchtower" to see how hollow Bob Dylan delivers his lyrics.

I'm sorry, i must disagree. Hendrix's version is musically far superior, but neither of them are good singers in a conventional sense. That said, I invariably hate conventionally adept singers, and love the way both of them sing. Hendrix does a lot better with that particular song, but it has little to do with his voice, in my opinion, for what that's worth

Basically anything by The Clash.

Though part of the appeal I guess is the near incomprehensibility of Joe Stummer.

It was the 70's, yeah, and the song was "Luh-uhvin' You, Cause You're Beautiful, La la la la la; la la la la la; ooooooooooo ..."

With little birdies chirping in tha background ....

Actually, I really liked the way Bob Dylan delivered "House of the Rising Sun," especially since he (as I recall) sang it from the female perspective (ie he didn't change the lyrics to match his gender). Really added an interesting dimension to the song.

That said, yeah, he's generally not the best of vocalists.

Default Monkeybot...

There is a version of "House of the Rising Sun" done by Norah Jones. The local student station played it one evening and it was absolutely fantastic. Apparently it isn't on any CD - someone had the good fortune to record it live when she was performing somewhere.

Try and find it, if you can.

That's because he recorded John Wesley Harding lying on a sofa (which he traded Albert Grossman for an Andy Warhol painting).
