The W-4's of my wife and I have only one thing on them that's reality and that's because the IRS put a box for it (~"Married but withold at the single rate"). It's what makes the numbers come out right--the system doesn't work right for dual-earner couples.

Note that some HR departments give you a copy of the front of the W-4 rather than the whole thing. There's a whole page of stuff on the back for figuring out what to do with unusual situations.
Basically my HR dept is running me in circles. They know I'm a single taxpayer. I told them that I will risk paying out if necessary, and that I want to increase my allowances...They're just being difficult I think. What do they care? It's not their money.

They probably don't want to be in the position our accountant was when that idiot increased his exemptions.

Why don't you try taking a copy of last year's 1040 showing the big refund you got?

Here's the full W-4, use last year's refund info to fill it out completely.

P.S. That's a .pdf. You'll need the acrobat reader installed to view & print it. It's a free download if you don't already have it.
