Default What a difference a year (or two) makes

Said by President George W. Bush in a debate with Al Gore during the campaign:

Quote:
I think one way for us to end up being viewed as the ugly American is for us to go around the world saying, ''We do it this way, so should you." Now, we trust freedom. We know freedom is a powerful, powerful, a powerful force much bigger than the United States of America, as we saw recently in the Balkans. But maybe I misunderstand where you're coming from, Mr. Vice President, but I think the United States must be humble and must be proud and confident of our values, but humble in how we treat nations that are figuring out how to chart their own course.
I'd even take this president over the one we currently have. Either this is a vicious lie, or he has become possessed by some wild (neocon) spirit since his election. Everything he has done and said since Sept 11. has been, chapter and verse, according to the neocon scripture promulgated by neocon pontiffs like William Kristol, Robert Kagan, Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle, to name a few. I repeat: The resemblance is much more than just passing, it is a striking oneness of thought.

We may never know for sure whether the president has simply been overcome and overwhelmed by the neocon hawks, or whether it was a huge lie perpetrated by this administration. All we know for sure is that something shocking has happened here.

EDIT:

A passage from an Antiwar.com piece also crystalizes this point:

Quote:
George W. Bush and the neoconservative cabal that has manipulated, bullied, and finally inspired him into war, invoke the ideals of the American Revolution even as they betray and corrupt the vision of the Founders. The Devil is known to invoke scripture, but this particular demonic clique has made a fetish out of it: they invoke "Americanism" to implement the most anti-American agenda imaginable. Only too glad to claim the mantle of "idealism" as against the dire realism of their own intelligence agencies, they seek to "export" democracy to the four corners of the globe, at gunpoint, starting with the most intractable region, the Islamic world.
