Re: Is it worth arguing with Christians?

It's like trying to un-brainwash a cult member. Only in this case the cult is about ten thousand times bigger and the brainwashing is infinitely more substantial. |

I can't express to you how shocked I was to hear a person that I liked, that I respected (religious beliefs aside) say something so utterly stupid as "I'm speaking truth" in a pleasant idealogical discussion.
It gets better. Later in the day, he was driving, going about 75 in a 35mph zone, and passing cars over the double yellow. I told him he was driving extemely dangerously and asked him to slow down. He told me I had nothing to worry about. I caught on and asked him, "Do you actually believe that God is going to protect you, not only from accidents but from speeding tickets, because you found Jesus?!" His calm response? "Yes." I told him to slow the fuck down or I was going to get out of the car at the next stop sign. He slowed down, and after or next stop, I drove for the rest of the day. Crazy bastard. When my uncle was a born again, I used to have discussions with him on an almost daily basis. I forgot that when he dropped the church he told me that many of the things I said helped him to see how absurd fundamentalism was, so I guess it can do some good. I remember when he told me he wasn't Christian. I hadn't seen him in a year and a half. We were talking, catching up, and I noticed that he was using a lot swear words. I asked him what was up with the new language. He said, "Oh. You don't know." He grinned from ear to ear. "Fuck the church. Bunch of stupid, small-minded, hypocritical bastards." He went on to tell me that he hated the six years he was a Christian, but fear of hell and embarrassment in front of his congregation kept him from abandoning it. He finally just got sick of it. Now I have one of my best friends back. |
