There is actually an asteroid coming closer than that one. It will be here in just a few weeks. The announcement of this asteroid is just a way for NASA to beg for more money. They have to give themselves an important mission that can't be ignored. The asteroid passing in August was not hyped up because they don't have sufficient time to benefit from it.

What's wrong with a little PR? The whole NEAR program is woefully underfunded as it is (but progress is being made). I think, in this case, some reporters jumped the gun while the Astronomers were out collecting confirmation data. Nothing to lose sleep over.
