Hands down, Vladimir Nabokov.

Lolita , Pale Fire , Pnin .

Great prose poet of the 20th century, without doubt.

I forgot

William Gibson & Bruce Sterling (neither awe-inspiring, but together, on "The DIfference Engine", pure brilliance)

I fear most of his possible fans will never even hear of him.

Jack Vance

In politics there are too many really. But Noam Chomsky is the one that I wish everyone had read.

Who's the guy that wrote Curious George? Who ever he is, he's my favorite.

It is almost impossible to pick a favourite, but if we go by who I read most often my favourite authors would probably be:

Terry Pratchett
John Dalmas
S.M. Stirling
David Drake
David Weber
John Ringo

But if you consider the rest of his books, you'll find that most fall far short of the level of Ender's Game. Consistency in quality is an important aspect in picking a "favorite author", on my part anyways.

I'll throw another recent favorite of mine into the ring:

Connie Willis.

Yeah, that guy. He's the best. Him and the cat that wrote "Where the Wild Things Are". Riveting-both of them. Such beautiful subtle symbolism. Such dignified prose. Magnificent characters. Next to Curious George himself, has there ever been such a well developed and soulful character as "the man in the yellow hat"? I think not.
