Your diet consists primarily of fat and sugar.

Get some stinkin' protein.

If you are not very active, you are consuming a great deal of fat and sugar that you are storing in case there is a famine, since you are not utilzing it. The worst thing about foods like pizza is that not only is there a gigantic insulin surge when you eat one, allowing far more of the calories to be stored as fat, but the fat delays gastric emptying, which causes yet another surge about four hours, on average, after consumption. This makes this sort of food twice as bad as most people think it is.

If you go out to eat somewhere, go to a steak house, or eat chicken or fish, or something similar.

Good background reading:

http://www.zonehome.com/met/met.htm

Glycemic Index:

http://diabetes.about.com/library/me...i/ngilists.htm

American College of Sports Medicine (good for general training and some diet info):

http://www.acsm.org/

National Strength and Conditioning Association (best overall weight lifting reference center):

http://www.nsca-lift.org/

What exactly did you have in mind? If you wish to get more specific, I will be happy to point you in the right direction. However, I am sure it would please the administrators if you would use the diet and exercise thread for this purpose.

Catalyst,

Great sites! Thanks for posting them.

Rider,

What catalyst said! The amount of carbs, sugar and fat in your diet is bad, REALLY bad!!

I will have to look through my long list of bookmarked sites, but I do have a site that will provide you with the nutritional content of the food at most restaurants, especially chains. Let me see if I can find it and I will post it here. It will be a REAL eye opener because often you think you are making a good or healthy choice and in reality you are NOT!

I would recommend the Zone and or Atkins (even if I was very unsure of Atkins before... but that is another story.) Presently, my husband (who wasn't terribly overweight, but had minor love handles) has lost 5% bodyfat in 8 weeks following Atkins (and is now 14% BF, but would like to lose 2-4% more to be at his ideal BMI and add another 10-15 lbs of muscle.) He is very good about his workouts (but isn't doing the intense workouts he did on Body For Life), but I know many men in your weight range (and ex-smokers) who have had a lot of success on Atkins (and was the catalyst for me re-examining Atkins) without doing much exercise at all (and for some NO exercise.)

There are 4 men in my office who have embarked on the Atkins road and between then (and in about 3-4 months) they have lost a combined total of 150 lbs. They all look great and it is quite impressive! They are even beginning to workout

And as catalyst said - EAT SOME PROTEIN!! Protein won't cause your insulin levels to spike and you will likely feel more satisfied.

Also, once a week or once every two weeks give yourself a "eat anything day" so you don't go crazy. Pizza and pasta are fine, but not as part of every day meals (unless you can go whole grain, but whole grain pasta tastes like crap to me and I can't eat it.) Eat more fiberous fruits and vegetables, drink lots of water and by all means eat some lean protein with EVERY meal!

Here is another good site for determining the glycemic index of the foods you eat: http://www.mendosa.com/

Here is a comprehensive GI food listing and a quote:

Quote:
The glycemic index (GI) is a numerical system of measuring how fast a carbohydrate triggers a rise in circulating blood sugarthe higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response. So a low GI food will cause a small rise, while a high GI food will trigger a dramatic spike. A list of carbohydrates with their glycemic values is shown below. A GI is 70 or more is high, a GI is 56 to 69 inclusive is medium, and a GI of 55 or less is low.
http://diabetes.about.com/library/me...i/ngilists.htm (oops ... looks like catalyst beat me to it!)

This bit of rambling wont help you at all, Rider, but I am intrigued by the fact that some people have a propensity to put on weight and some dont. (Im also intrigued by the fact that some people have a propensity to believe in gods and some dont...)
I happen to be thin (age 60, height 5ft 9, weight 154) and fear that if I dont eat as much as I can, Ill get below a healthy weight.
After a hearty meal with friends one evening, I noted my weight was 159lbs. When I weighed myself the following morning, it was back to 154.
My wife complains Im like a furnace, and I am aware that when I go to bed after a good meal, I do get very hot.
Trying to get to sleep the other night, having been pushed to the edge of the bed, I wondered if there wasnt the basis for a scientific study in measuring a persons calorific output; I envisaged sitting in an insulated tent with a vent in the top fitted with a freely-rotating fan blade which would be turned by the hot air coming off the top of my head, the speed of its revolutions electronically measured. I could be fed a variety of foods like creamy puddings, steak, roast potatoes, bread and butter peanuts etc to see how they affected the heat I generated. And these findings then compared with those derived from someone whos fatter than me.
Im perfectly sure thered be a difference.
If its at all reassuring for you to know, in the event of a famine its the skinny sods like me, (http://www.loven.plus.com/infidels/flood1.jpg)
who need to eat just to stay thin, whod be the first to die.
