I definitely don't understand the basic comment. As to the flood and its sources, are people aware of the nastiness of the flooding of the Euphrates River in ancient times? Is it pure chance that the first biblical creation account talks of a creation out of the waters (of chaos, as the Hebrew word "tehom" for "deep" is a cognate of the Akkadian tiamat, the watery chaos dragon slain by Marduk which allowed the creation of the world)? |

Quote:
In Gen.2:10 our stream of consciousness divides into two branches. In the first we seek pleasure along the principles of power wealth and beauty. Seeking this we will search the entire world just as this river winds throughout the land. In the second river we encounter pain to the same degree as we seek pleasure because one cannot be conceived to exist without the other. Thereofre this river winds throught the same land by a different name. In the third river we look back and see a river rise in the East from where we began our pursuit of happiness (East of Eden). The fourth is the Euphrates (means "bright mind") and overflows out of abundance in Eden. Euphrates is paradise regained as the two minds are joined. |

My original statement: "Is it pure chance that the first biblical creation account talks of a creation out of the waters (of chaos, as the Hebrew word "tehom" for "deep" is a cognate of the Akkadian tiamat, the watery chaos dragon slain by Marduk which allowed the creation of the world)?"
This question I must admit was rhetorical! ---------------------------------------- Amos: "Not chance but archetypal images of the same reality. In Gen.2:10 our stream of consciousness divides into two branches...[snip] The fourth is the Euphrates (means "bright mind") and overflows out of abundance in Eden. Euphrates is paradise regained as the two minds are joined. " This is a folk-etymology for the Euphrates, who name comes from an original Akkadian "Purattu" (which was "PRT" in biblical Hebrew) and transformed by the Persians into "Ufratu" (metathesis), from whence came Euphrates. My original post was an attempt to look at the original underpinnings of the flood motif to be found in the dangers of river flooding. |
