Let's see here; how about University of Tennessee, Knoxville Professor Massimo Piglucci, the famous atheist, biologist, and Darwinist? He holds the "office" of "Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he teaches ecology and evolutionary biology. His research is on the evolution of genotype-environment interactions, i.e. on nature-nurture problems."

I wonder if that counts? His paycheck does come from the taxpayers of the State of Tennessee.....

Interesting. Massachusetts has perhaps the worst of them all - probably for being among the oldest I'd guess. But how times change. I've got to say that upon hearing the stories from some people here, I could do a lot worse than live in this state where if I want to talk about religion to basically anyone, I ahve to start the conversation.

Question

What ever happened to the phrase from the US Constitution that states that, "No religious test" shall be required to hold public office?

The Texas constitution also allows people to be barred from public office if they do not "acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being".

The Tennessee law violates both the original constitution ("no religious test shall ever be required") and the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Those two clauses apply to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment.

It's still there. That in part makes all of the state constitutions moot on that point - so long as the US Constitution overrides the states.

I was really surprised to see no green or red text in the Virginia laws.

Even more surprised to see so much green and red in Massachusetts!
