Hey theater person, I need somewhere to go practice. I can sing beautifully but don't know much about acting. I had a great time in a local amateur production of The Elixir of Love, in the chorus. We were all playing drunk purple footed peasants. It was a blast. I got griped at for wearing my glasses on stage (GASP!) so I could see where I was going. So they didn't call me back.

I'm one of those nerds who goes to the opera and sings along with it, perfectly in tune.

Opera Nut:

First about the glasses as I too wear the blasted things. For stage work i wear contacts, but only when acting, otherwise its glasses all the way. And if people give you grief about them at rehersals they are far to anal retentive as far as i can see.

As far as learning about acting, sure there are books on the subject and a lot of technical terms that people like to throw about but at the end of the day what really matters is not the technicals so much as really understanding the character you are playing. It often helps to give them a back story of somekind, whether you are Hamlet or peasant #46. The back story helps inform the action and alows for a more rounded character.

Now you said you had done amature theatre, good stuff that is i must say. If the local amature theatre people hold open auditions go to as many as possible and dont be too concerned about the actuall audition, look at it as a chance to practice. You also get to see what other actor type people are doing and can learn from that as well. I personally have been to many an audition and i never really cared about what part i ended up with, if any at all, but the more auditions i went to the better i got. So keep at the amature theatre if you can.

Another possible way to improve on acting would be to get some people together for the heck of it and try to put a play together, done this and the final product was awful but great fun. For this kind of thing classic plays work the best because you dont have to pay to put them on.

And i know all about people who sing along with operas, my best friend was trained to sing opera and she sings it all the time. I just recite lines to plays i know. Its very nerdy of us both but what the hell, its fun.
