Default How do you like your 'cue?

Your barbecue, that is.

This evening, I got to go to the "Q Shack" in the middle of Durham, which serves very North Carolina-style barbecue. For those not in the know, NC barbecue is vinegar-based rather than tomato-based... it's quite a sharp little kick in the mouth, and pretty delicious. Especially with a side of cool potato salad to balance out the sourness.

As good as the Q Shack's offerings were, however, I must say I prefer tomato-based barbecue. IMO, vinegar-based, while it has its virtues, just doesn't have that same sweet tangyness I've come to know and like.

And lest I be labeled jingoistic, let me also say I've never met a Korean barbecue I didn't like (although sad to say, I haven't met many).

So how do you like your barbecue?

snags over open coal, on a slice of bread with tomato or barbecue sauce. and fried onion, although that's real hard to cook on a grill

I was thinking there were two kinds of NC style barbecue. I know all the places around here have the vinegar-based kind, I rather like it. But I'm not picky, I'll eat any kind. Except with onions....I hate onions....

Indeed. Barbeque in eastern North Carolina is quite different from barbeque in central/western North Carolina. Many North Carolinians take their barbeque about as seriously as their religion, and would be quite offended by the thought that someone might not know the difference.

If you want to start a fight in North Carolina, go into any public place in central/western N.C. and loudly state that you prefer eastern barbeque, or go to eastern N.C. and state your preference for western barbeque.

*It's barbeque, by the way.

Cheers,

Michael

Ah... I haven't had western then.

I'm going to blame my dad for not teaching me better. He's from Tennessee.

I don't think its THAT big a deal. I'm in western N.C. and the local place here serves eastern style barbeque, not western. Of course most of the people here don't pay attention to anything that goes on outside of the county, so they wouldn't know the difference anyway.
