Default Tax question

I neglected to file my taxes in 2000 and 2001 (I'm an idiot). Nevertheless, I am entitled to a refund for both years. How do I go about collecting for these years? Is anyone aware of a online service that allows you to file for past years or do I need to visit a tax service in person? If the latter, which tax service is the best (cheapest)?

The statute of limitations is three years. You should be able to simply file your 2000 and 2001 tax returns. Of course, you may incur a penalty (I believe about $50) for late filing, but most penalties are a function of the amount owed and not paid, so that isn't a big deal. You shouldn't even need to file a form 1040X (which is for amended returns) since you didn't file in the first place.

You probably shouldn't even try to file you back tax returns on line. The IRS website should have the forms for 2000 and 2001 available in its form download portion. I believe that the website is www.irs.gov

You will have too go to forms on the website and make sure to get the appropriate old 1040s instead of the current ones. You will also need the instructions for each year as the tax tables change. If you can't find the forms at irs.gov, try your local library (main branch).

Just get the forms and file. No big deal, they'll hit you with penalties that are a pretty hefty chunk of what you owe--thus $0.
