The Qur'an, like the Bible, is a <a href="http://www.geocities.com/stmetanat/platyquran.htm"" target="_blank">flat-earth book</a>.

This is more a "defend your view" one though (with him defending it) I'll give him credit, he's trying harder than any christian I've seen so far. |

You might want to peruse <a href="http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/denis_giron/islamsci.html" target="_blank">Islamic Science: Does Islamic literature contain scientific miracles?</a> which has some interesting observations, including the Qur'an telling us that sperm comes from a spot between the backbone and the ribs.

Frankly if a God or even an advanced alien species did try and explain creation, physics and biology to ancient people without any background in any of these subjects, the myths wouldn’t be any different than they are now. Each writer would have told a story in his own awkward words and nothing would be any different.

One thing to watch out for on this topic is "secondary retellings of biblical creation myths". I have come across a few instances where it looks pretty obvious that the following occurred:
1) Missionary A visits region X in 1800 (or whatever) and tells the usual bible stories. 2) These stories get retold, spread around, etc. for a few generations, long after Missionary A and his mission have left. 3) Gullible Missionary B visits region X (or adjacent region Y) in something like 1970. He hears versions of the above stories and concludes "independent confirmation of the Bible!". He excitedly writes home to the congregation, denominational periodical, etc. 4) A creationist comes across this and adds it to his list of "independent" stories similar to the bible. There's probably documentation of this somewhere on the web if anyone is interested. nic |
