Angry "The Spear of Jesus" on Discovery

Tonight on Discovery, at 10PM EST.

If anyone gets a chance to watch, please post your 'findings' here - I unfortunately won't be able to .

Just to be nitpicky...why is it "The Spear of Christ"? Shouldn't it be "The Spear of Some Roman Guy Who poked Christ"?

I don't know why, but things like this really bug me

Technically, it's the Spear of Jesus, not the Spear of Christ.

How in the HELL are you supposed to test that thing for veracity? It's not like we have a freakin' DNA sample, now is it? Oh, lookie, it's the right age! It must be the right spear!

Bloody morons.

I just caught the end of the special. He tested the composition and the structure of the spear. They compared it with other ancient weapons. I'm typing this as I watch. The spear is genuine. It is not a fake...waiting on them to mention Jesus. Discovery calls this a "holy spear." Some modifications in the 14th and 11th century. Seventh century too.

This is a farce. They're just trying to get it dated at the same time as the crucifixion?

The spear does not date back to the time of Christ! Booooo!

...but the nail inside the spear might contain a nail from the crucifixion! Something has been added to the nail. Let's speculate some...so the news is: it could be the nail from the crucifixion, we'll never know.

Big deal, the spear of Jesus. I bought Jesus' Rolex from a guy in New York for only $10.

Ahhh, the spear and nail method of crucifixtion. Jesus got off easy. Much kinder than the tie him up to the cross bar, let him dangle for days until he is fried in the sun, his own weight has dislocated both shoulders, his tongue has swollen to the size of a fist because of thirst, and he craps himself. The spear was a gift.

Not that this has anything to do with the show on Discovery, or the fact that a museum displayed a piece of crap that a huckster pawned off on them. Even if the huckster lived hundreds of years ago.

Here is something that annoys me. Channels like the History channel, TLC, and Discovery channel throw away the scientific method every time it comes to looking critically at abrahamic religions. The most I've ever heard them say is that there are allot of similarities between Osiris and Jesus. They have no problem saying Egyptian mythology , Norse mythology , or even Native American mythology but I have never heard them mention Christian mythology.
I would really like them to do a show outlining the utter lack of evidence that Jesus even existed in the first place. How about a show that exposes the numerous historical inaccuracies that abound throughout the Bible. I've watched them long enough to know that on christmas and easter there is not going to be any programming of educational merit.

So true, gsx.

You know, in the middle ages, there were all kinds of "authentic" relics floating around Europe. Including Jesus' foreskin! (I think there were (are?) something like 6 different churches claiming to have a part of it.)

You could buy sweat, urine, pieces of the cross; all kinds of things that came directly from the Savior.

In a little town here in Ohio, there is a museum with alleged relics from many of the saints.

The Catholic church of course, has never agreed to allow any type of scientific inquiry into these things. It took years and years for them to agree to a little piece of the Shroud of Turin being examined.

Gah. We caught part of a show on "The Real Moses" or something like that. I threw my dad for a loop when I mentioned that these folks didn't specify which "ten commandments" they were talking about. So after I got home, I looked it up in the Blue Letter Bible and sent the relevant verses off to him. He was shocked, because he'd done an awful lot of bible study...and no one ever mentioned that little bit to him.

I used to keep that section bookmarked in a bible next to the door to use when fundies and/or mormons came by. And a number of other "wait, they never taught us about that" passages. Strangely enough, the door-to-door religionists have stopped visiting my house.
