Sorry all, just a quick question I am hoping someone can answer.
I run windows 2000 and have Microsoft Office installed. How in the hell do I disable Findfast.exe from starting automatically? Thanks for any help, Vice |

I'm not sure, but you might try the following: In add/remove programs, select Office installation. You should have an option to remove selected components. Make sure you have your CDs ready.

Thanks for the idea Philisoft, I looked under the add/remove, but there is not an option for Findfast.exe.

If I remember right:
Open windows explorer. Goto c:\winnt\profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs (note winnt may have changed to something different with 2000 and you may need to look under other profiles if you have them) Delete the shortcut to findfast.exe I think that findfast.exe is a windows program versus an office program, but it's been a while so I could be wrong. |

Not really. Sometimes Findfast starts immediately, sometimes two hours after I start up.
Findfast.exe is a utility that Microsoft office uses to catalog your word documents, excel files, etc (basically any microsoft file). The idea is that by creating a catalog with filename/location when you click on a file it will load faster. I believe that Findfast.exe can be scheduled, which would be ok, except I can not find the control section. Basically findfast runs as a background process, you can only see it if you control/alt/delete then click processes. Because it is basically searching every file on your hard drive and makeing a not of it, it uses about 98 % of your free cpu and your hard drive is continually on. This of course slows down anything else you are doing. |

IIRC, Fastfind has an Icon in the control panel. Go there and click on it. Find the option to disable FF.

if you're on win95/98/ME go to start-run- and type msconfig...over to the startup tab and look for findfast or whatever and uncheck it. This will keep it from starting up, if I understand your situation correctly.

If you can't seem to get rid of find fast through the startup group then hack the registry and remove the stupid resource hog.
Don't attempt to hack the registry unless you are comfortable. HKey local machine\ software\ microsoft\ windows\ current version\ Run The series of RUN folders (run, run once, run ex) contain all your startup items not listed in the startup folder or msconfig. Delete find fast. Again, don't go hacking the registry unless you are comfortable and now how to restore it if you hit the delete key too many times. |
