Default Rand Corp: No point in issuing a warning

No, it's not about terrorism just yet, it's about Armageddon asteroids.

Quote:
"If you can't do anything about a warning, then there is no point in issuing a warning at all," Dr Sommer told the association yesterday.
Hmmmm, I guess no one informed Tom Ridge... anyway, it goes on:

Quote:
"Overreaction not just by the public but by policy-makers scurrying around before the thing actually hits because we can't do anything about it anyway ... to a large extent you are better off not adding to your social costs," said Dr Sommer, who is also an adviser on terrorism.
You mean duct tape and plastic won't be enough? Is the irony palpable yet?

I would also like to know how can you add to the social costs of the end of civilization.

Well seeing all we need to do is land a drill rig on top of an asteroid, drill down a bit and plant a nuke it, I don't see why we fear asteroids anymore.

This reminds me of the old Brookings report from the early sixties that advised the government and NASA to not tell the public if they found any evidense of ET. They claimed society would colapse.
