I did some thinking overnight about a question about the coin(s) raised yesterday by Gooch's dad:
Quote:
Wouldn't any coin imprints on the shroud, if it were authentic, actually be mirror images of the actual coin?
Yes, I think they would be mirror images. So in thinking about mirror images, one can distinguish-----if one thinks of the Latin alphabet---- between letters which are symmetrical (like H or O) and letters which are assymetrical (like E or F). The former retain their form in a mirror image (BECAUSE they're symmetrical) but the latter look, in a mirror, as if they have been written backwards. So the coin images would be the same way.....

Cheers!

That's incredible! I never would have thought of that.
And these coins say what? TWGI?

Well, by all accts. the letters "UCAI" are supposed to be visible.

Here is my problem. The coin is supposed to be the size of a dime. How thick is the weaving on the cloth? I don't even think the cloth can support the necessary resolution to recreate letters convincingly.

Whatever. This is all wishful thinking. Shroudies might actually come off more believable if they didn't try to cram every detail of the biblical resurrection into one artifact.

leonard(e):
And how do you explain that Jewish (ie non-Christian) Israeli experts in botany are seeing the same things as Mary and Allan Whanger?

Hmm. Well I guess what I would want to know is
"How come you can't see Jesus's Whanger?"

I think that's an excellent prediction.

[Okay, I'm sorry, I'll stop now. Couldn't resist.]

P.S. mfa(r)ber rules.

A very nice (if long) exchange over the question of the coins over the eyes is here:
http://www.shroud.com/lombatti.htm

The main interlocutors are Antonio Lombatti, and Alan Whanger.

Cheers!

I am reliably informed that if you count the number of threads in the Shroud and divide that number by a secret number known only to 32nd Degree Masons and certain Bolshevik Jews, you come up with the exact number of votes that Bush's people stole in Florida.

The Shroud of Turin belongs in the Humor Forum. Last time I was in Turin, you could buy ashtrays with the Shroud image embossed on the bottom. Somehow, the notion of grinding out a cigarette on the Shroud image tickled my fancy.

A 700 year old joke can't be all bad.
