I helped dig both the long dead, the freshly dead, and the living from a rainsoaked landslide in Jerusalem during the middle of the night. The landslide was behind the hostel I lived in, and it was an old Arabic cemetary that plowed into an Arab cafe, killing at least half of the patrons. I carried one man to a waiting wheelbarrow. He was a big man, still alive, and I would never have had the strength to lift him in normal situations. When all that could be done was done, many hours later, I vomitted and collapsed. During the height of the crisis, I was able to get past the stench, the panic, and the sheer macabre of it all and function. I'm not sure I could handle such an event again. |

lol. Thanks, cojana and Evangelion, but I didn't really have a lot of choice in the matter. It was right there - it felt like it would come through the hostel walls. And there were many people helping. I'm sure I'm not the only one who still sometimes see that scene or smells that smell in their dreams.
Besides, I admire people who can handle the aftermath of a car accident and help out. About 1 year ago, I was driving to Auckland and there had been an accident ahead on the motorway. Ambulances and everything were already there, thanks goodness, but as I approached my heart went into my mouth and beat so hard, and I got that cold sweat feeling. I couldn't hack it and took the next exit, going miles out of my way to get to where I wanted to go. ![]() |
