House cafeterias change names for 'french fries' and 'french toast'
Move reflects anger over France's stance on Iraq

Tuesday, March 11, 2003 Posted: 12:52 PM EST (1752 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The cafeteria menus in the three House office buildings will change the name of "french fries" to "freedom fries," a culinary rebuke of France, stemming from anger over the country's refusal to support the U.S. position on Iraq.

Ditto for "french toast," which will be known as "freedom toast."

The name changes were spearheaded by two Republican lawmakers who held a news conference Tuesday to make the name changes official on the menus.

That'll show them Frenchies! I am so happy to see my tax dollars paying the salaries of Republican lawmakers like this. Is there NOTHING better they could have spent their time on?????

How about a Constitutional amendment against burning the flag?

Or how about a resolution affirming "one nation under God"?

Gosh, there are *so* many useful things that Republicans do for us these days.

I decided that these two morons needed to hear from the people. Here is a copy of the e-mail I sent to Rep Jones of NC. Rep Ney of Ohio did not have an e-mail address listed on his website, imagine that.

Congressman Jones, I was sourly disappointed by your recent move to change the name of French fries and French toast to Freedom fries and toast. I don't recall there ever being a greater waste of time and resources by an elected official.

I urge you to stop wasting time, money and energy attempting to enact such moronic changes and focus on the business of our nation.

If this is the most constructive thing you and your staff can find to tackle then I truly pity the people back home in your district.

Thank you,
Rick D Boyd

"Freedom Roulette" and "Freedom Water Torture" don't have quite the same ring to them, I guess.

Can somebody who lives in the area give me an idea of how serious this anger is? It doesn't really seem that it is 'in fun.' Is there this much real xenophobia now? (HW thinks it may be getting close to time to cross over the border.)
