There is no way that a Xtian could follow the bible and stay out of jail for capital murder, since God instructs people to commit mass slaughter, or at least kill their kids. That's why they don't follow it.

I don't think that is the reason why most "Christians" don't follow the Bible. Otherwise, why don't they follow the parts that wouldn't get them arrested?

(Laurie) Pyrrho, thank you for the devastatingly relevant Bible quotes! Your argument is so compelling, I highly doubt Muffinstuffer will be able to present any [logically valid] counterargument. "Cherry-picker Christians... pick-and-choose Christians." Descriptive term. Personally I'm very big on having the courage to be intellectually honest no matter where your questioning takes you. It's not that easy to insist on being intellectually honest and consistent, but it is essential to a truly free and self-actualized life. It seems to me that in preferring to focus on the "Jesus loves you, happy happy joy joy" stories presented by their local ministers, that even liberal, middle-of-the-road Christians like Muffinstuffer have abdicated the intellectual courage to honestly, critically examine old vengeful, intolerant Yahweh.

Thank you to everyone who weighed in on this thread, including believers. I most definitely DO welcome their input. IMO, Christians need to be exposed to nonbelievers' concerned criticisms of their dogma, such as my assertion here that the Doctrine of Original Sin seems abusively, psychologically damaging to children. Most believers never visit boards like this one. At least here on the II board we get religionists willing to confront these concepts.

PS, Bill Snedden: LOVED the John Galt quote from Atlas Shrugged. Perfect.

Actually, Muffinstuffer has been busy being beat about the head and chest elsewhere by nonbelievers in the G.R. Forum. That, and dealing with the Georgia Dept. of Revenue has kept me ridiculously busy, so I haven't had time to discuss....at the latest I SHOULD be able to tomorrow. I will definitely say this discussion is making me think. For the record, I'm a 'fundie.'

[fundy]Well, it obvious that our current laws were inspired by evil atheists who try to undermine God's will at every turn. We need to return to the values of the bible, and allow mass genocide and the stoning of young children.[/fundy]

That would be Elisha in 2 Kings, 2:23-24. Elisha was Elijah's protege. Some children ridiculed him for his baldness and in a fury, he cursed them. Two bears rushed out of the forest and killed 42 of the children. Nice, eh?

For the exact wording, see this link and scroll down to the aforementioned verses.

Actually, I wish my boyfriend COULD kill his sons for displeasing him.

One of them is an idiot goth and the other one is an idiot fundy. It would at least get rid of one annoying fundy.

(Laurie) I know how that "busy with Real Life" thing goes. I tend not to "compute" on weekends, preferring to occupy myself with my real-life husband, garden, family items, pets, social life, etc. But I'm glad this idea's made you think. Bounce it off some of your fellow fundies; I'd be interested to hear their feedback.
