Oct 2000.
The guy running a social bulletin board gave a link to here when he posted his Question of the Week: "Does God exist?" I had never heard of metaphysical naturalism or secular humanism though the concepts really hit home when I read them. I browsed the main site and articles for a year off and on and lurked on the boards. The best part about the guy from the other bulletin board was that he opened a thread here and dragged a couple of IIDB regulars over there. Which is how I met my best friend, Pitshade, who encouraged me to really start posting here on IIDB at the beginning of 2002. |

Poetry done lead me here.
I was shooting the breeze in the chatty place at a poetry forum - talking politics - when a guy who writes some very nifty avant-garde pomes posted me a note telling me I would enjoy this place. So I followed the link and lo! I was brought upon here, the most interesting site I'd ever discovered! And it was good. I hung out in PD awhile, before venturing further. I didn't know it was an atheist website. Atheism wasn't really something I'd ever really considered, as I'd never had to free myself from the shackles of religion. I come from a secular family and nation - so why worry. After reading about the theist stronghold on all things American and the rise of neo-con Christianity, I began to take my non-theism, humanism, metaphysical naturalism, and bleeding heart liberalism so much more seriously. And it is good. |

I can't recall exactly how I found this site; there may have been a link from some other site (though I don't know which one) or some other atheist recommended it. I mostly looked at the newswire at first, but then started "lurking" on the forum and following the discussions. I got to the point on a couple of them where I had to "chime in" with my two cents so I registered and now try to get here most days.
It's been interesting in a number of ways. For one, the perspective of non-Americans is great to have. I also appreciate the eyes and ears of other non-believers connecting me to important happenings in the news. It's also reassuring to know I'm not crazy to not believe, as American society would have you think sometimes. We also, as a whole, seem to have a pretty good sense of humor and I find myself "lol" quite often. The connection to a variety of people of different ages is also a good perspective. Now if that dang server weren't so busy all the time, it'd really be fun! |

I used to post on alt.atheism and the talk.origins site was de rigeur as a reference there. At some point, someone also mentioned II and the rest, as they say, is history...

Met the Non-preying Mantis at GAMOW and he said I should check it out. November 2002. I later found that I had visited the library previously, but didn't know about the forums.
I wander about, mostly avoid the uppers, except to read. pardon me, must check out the 'on fire' thread' RD |

I was posting on talk.origins then someone said that the creationists on baptistboard need some ejuamatatin so I joined up over there and stopped posting on t.o (bye zoe). From BB, I learned about II from scigirl/froggie, despite the fact that BB tried desperately to censor such information. I eventually joined up over here and the rest is history.

Well, I don't rightly know. One day I was going through a bunch of old links that I'd added to my Favorites during middle school, and this was one of them. I visited again, looked around a bit, and one thing led to another.

The unofficial moutpiece for the Clemson Skeptics used to post here, and he directed me to it.

I also came here via the Positive Atheism site (now hosted by the Secular Web, though Cliff's health problems are having an extreme impact on the amount of work he's been able to do on the site for the last year or so). That would have been very shortly before my membership date.
cheers, Michael |
