Who's with me? Remember the days when Pearljam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins, and the like were played on the radio? WTF happened to all of that? I'm listening to Temple of the Dog right now, and remembering what a truly great album that was. Nobody can sing heartfelt angst like Chris Cornell. Nobody. And these were some great songs, not totally predictable and bland like today's crap. Grrr. Anybody else feel this way?

Those bands you listed might be good fluff, but real rock saw its peak in the 70's and died with the 80's in my opinion. Pick a band that debuted after about 1987/88 and more than likely you've chosen a band that sucks in comparison to those before.
Then again, I've never been one to heap accolades on modern music anyway, as it mostly hurts my ears. I prefer classical. So I guess I do feel the way you feel, sorta, except ya gotta shift the time scale. ![]() |

Well, I'll admit that the rock from the 70's is great stuff (Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush etc...) but I think the early 90's had some great stuff as well. The 80's were mostly crap (except for Rush, again), and most rock coming out now is also crap. It comes in spurts, I guess.
I can appreciate classical music (I have a decent amount of musical training: piano lessons as a kid, played percussion from 7th grade through 12th, and also in college for a semester.) but it's not something I like to listen to often. I prefer well-conceived and performed guitar rock most of the time. And I can't seem to find any good examples of it these days... |

IMHO, most of the decent rock went to the classic rock stations.
![]() Then again, I'm a folkie. I go to trad music festivals and the closest I've been to a grunge-rock concert is Bob Dylan. Who was absolutely fucking amazing, BTW. I steal my mom's old LPs without a second thought, and I actually have a record player in my dorm room. So it makes sense that I would like 60s music the best. 70s is growing on me, but it still has a bit of growing to do before I like it as much as 60s. And there were some good 80s songs, such as "I Will Walk 500 Miles" (by the Pretenders? Proclaimers? can't remember...), or a limited selection of Michael Jackson tunes (mostly limited to "Thriller" and "Billie Jean;" remember, this was before his nose fell off...) |

It's a matter of opinion. I too think the rock of the early 90's was great (as was the 70's), but I still think rock is good in the new millennium.

Wasted Potential,
I have found myself pondering the same thing recently. My musical tastes range all over, however, I fondly look back on some of the bands that emerged in the early 90's. (i.e., Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, etc.) Now it seems that I can't tell one band from the next. *sigh* Perhaps I am just getting older. ![]() |

I know how you feel.
Recently, I've just began to appreciate the unique sound of Alien Ant Farm. Their album 'Anthology' is really good, in my opinion. It feels like they put everything into their music. |

"rock" rock ceased being good in the 70s. Punk rock, Indie rock, hardcore and metal are still going strong though.
just not in the mainstream... not much good is though. |
