From www.m-w.com

Main Entry: awe
Pronunciation: 'o
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old Norse agi; akin to Old English ege awe, Greek achos pain
Date: 13th century
1 : an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime <stood in awe of the king> <regard nature's wonders with awe>
2 archaic a : DREAD, TERROR b : the power to inspire dread

Hence Awesome - inspiring awe: i.e inspiring fear and dread.

Yup. Thats God for you. Not loving, but fear-inspiring.

[PS - how did that Pastor cited above know that the other soldiers did not deserve saving also (other than the obvious fact that they weren't saved)? Hvave their names even been released yet? And are we to suppose that that girl was the ONLY good Christian in the bunch?]

[And way to go Special Forces! :notworthy]

Not necessarily. On another board I frequent, a minister rather cavalierly dismissed the soldiers who die "without embracing the Lamb of God, Jebus" as doomed to an eternity in hell. I told the putz he had better get on his knees and thank his lucky stars that those brave soldiers burning in hell are there so he could be free to believe that sort of thing.

And did that minister claim he was a God as well?

Nonsense ... people like your minister friend seems to believe that just because he had embraced Christianity (or any other religion for that matter), that he is saved and whoever not with him is damned.

He should get on his knees and thank his lucky stars because there are people like those soldiers going half across the globe to fight an enemy who will not think twice about dropping a nuke on his pathetic little head and die protecting him so he could go around damning others.

And ask the man next time you see him "Why did Jesus went despite of knowing that he will be persecuted by the Jews?" for me.
