To the best of my knowledge, that's not the problem at all. A 2.5+ GHz cpu shouldn't have much problem emulating all the dedicated hardware, especially if it's combined with a high-end gpu. The problem, from what I've heard, is that, were someone to make such, Sony would be all over them like grease on a Pizza Hut pizza. The PS2 is extremely profitible for Sony, and being able to play ps2 games on a PC would cut into their profits signifigantly, which they strenuously object to. Same goes for Xbox, and, one would imagine, gamecube.

As for the topic, I am microsoft's bitch, and will probably continue to be, until OpenGL 1.5 comes out (asuming it's equiv to directx9, and is supported by most games). I also despise consoles. Before anyone dismisses me as a PC fanboy, consider:

1) Mouse and keyboard combinations can be adjusted, as per the players' preferences, and allow a lot finer control.
2) Analog sticks for RTS, FPS? I think not. And, if I want a controller, I can *gasp* buy one for my pc.
3) 640x480 vs. 1600x1240. Don't make me laugh.
4) Loading times from a dvd.
5) no split-screen multiplayer
6) mods, patches, etc (finally being remedied for consoles, but, meh)
7) If I'm going to spend $200usd on something that will allow me to play games, it might as well be a new graphics card. For $100, you can get one that will be over the minimum requirements for Halo PC, Half-Life 2, et al.

But, enough console bashing. After all, it's off-topic.
*sigh* I hope OpenGL 1.5 will allow me to rid myself of MacroCrash (which is what every version of windows I've used - 95, 98, 98se, ME, XP, XP pro- has done. Far too often.) forever.

Windows 2000 is probably the MS operating system of choice to pair with Linux. I have no problems. I do internet stuff under Linux, and I play Windows games under Windows.

best,

Sure, you can play games under Linux. Often won't be the exact same games you'd be playing under Windows, but if you were a conformist you wouldn't be using Linux would you. And if you're a retro-gamer you're in for a treat. Got Rocks'n'Diamonds(Boulderdash), Super Methane Brothers(bubble-bobble), KAsteroids(duh), ClanBomber(bomberman), lots of tetris and tetris-like games, Chromium and Power Manga(shoot-em-ups), Crossfire<shameless plug>I coded this one</shameless plug>, breakout clones, etc etc ad inifitum. And that's just the free games.. also, there's emulators for just about anything under the sun.

Yes Linux can play games. But Linux gaming sucks.

If you are an avid gamer there is very little for you. All of the games are out dated and cost a premium because it is a niche market. Games made 2-3 years ago for windows can cost $30-$50 for Linux while you can buy them for under $10 for windows.

Hardware setup for games under Linux is a bitch. If you want 3D games you better have an Nvidia card. Forget about 3D sound, Linux doesn't do it. Sound itself can be a problem depending on what sound daemon you have running.

Winex is even worst. The game support ranking are over rated with 4's and 5's out of five barely working. Plus you are giving no incentive for game publishers to support Linux.

I'm not a Linux basher. I have bought just about every ported game for Linux but is just a pain in the ass. It is just cheaper and better to dual boot.

If your are still interested in Linux gaming I have a stack to sell you.

Ouch! As a person that writes games for Linux that hurts.

You mean, Windows games under Linux sucks; true, but that's already been said.

Again, you're repeating the obvious. Mainstream games are Windows games; Windows games don't work well under Linux.

Not in my experience.

True. Nvidia is one of the companies that provides drivers that support hardware acceleration for Linux; some other companies provide drivers, but most don't support hardware acceleration. ATI's supposedly trying to improve, though.

WRONG WRONG WRONG! OpenAL

This can be true. It took me a while to figure out I'd need to have ESD running to get sound under Gnome...

Excuse me, but it really sounds like you ARE bashing linux. Some of what you've said is just plain false. And cheaper? I have needed to, for one reason or another, buy the following GUI/OSes from Microsoft:
*3.0
*3.1
*3.11
*95
*98
*98SE
*ME
*2000pro
The last one hurt the most, their OSes seem to cost more every day... In the end, I have spent thousands on microsoft products, but at the VERY most hundreds on Linux. So don't give me cheaper. More efficient, yes.

My linux distro came bundled with more awesome games than I ever bought for Windows...

Both are running W98se. One is my gaming rig, the other is the internet machine. They never lock up. The only time they get shut down is when a storm is coming and they only get rebooted when I do driver changes or install/uninstall software.
If Windows is so shitty, I should be painfully aware of it. Im' not, therefor Bill Gates is GOD.

Win98 is very stable. All the local internet cafes run that and they never have lock-up problems. I stupidly bought Windows ME.....<sigh>

Ok I have read 2 posts on how great 98 is. I used it until 2k was available. First, 98 is old - time to upgrade, second it is NOT as stable as the 2k-xp systems as the operating system has direct access to hardware - hence the lovely BSODs
(Blue Screens OF Death for those who dont know)
that 98 was so adept at creating! I upgraded to XP - and once up and running compared to 2k it is one of the less shity versions of a Micro$oft product. I dual boot between XP and SuSE 8.2 no problems at all - as for gaming on linux as stated earlier I play some on my consoles and the FPS I play on my XP partition. I really dont care what OS people use as long as you can work with it great! I do have to note that I have never payed for a Micro$oft O$ (purely out of spite mind you) and I have bought two distros of Linux - to those who would immediately berate me for buying a 'free' OS I purchase:

1.) For the distro documentation provided (I like to read about new features and brush up on some less used commands and such - plus I dont like sleeping with my monitor - I usually read in bed).

and

2.) Because I believe those who make worthwhile products deserve our support.

ok well off to read another topic!
