Well, yeah. But in this case I think that the "rationalization" points the way for how things should go. The relationship between provider-husband and mother-wife used to be the defining relationship in the family unit; now I think that most people in our particular society see the relationship between parent and child as the defining relationship and I suspect that the law should reflect that if it wants to be relevant to society.

Of course the proposal I outlined is far, far too big a change to expect to see implemented soon, or maybe ever. Simpler, albeit jerry-rigged measures will probably supplant the need.
