thanks seraphim. that makes sense, and all the difference. violence is only an option when needed. So where does non-resistance come in? Perhaps you could explain to me if non-resistance has any importance to Buddhist teachings, and whether non-resistance can be applied in certain circumstances.

yes sarpedion, as an amoral egoist I will do whatever it takes to get where I want and what I want, but surely what 'I want' implies a value system of sorts. I agree with your view of violence. Similar to what Seraphim stated, when armed force fail to provide a code of conduct based on necessity soldiers often use their power to exploit the weak. This ends in horrific rape, the murder of children and slavery.
