Personally I like the convenience, it saves my waiting in line at the bank, and if I have Friday off I still get my money without having to go into work. But payroll departments can make mistakes, and I have to remind myself to examine my check stub and make sure I got paid any overtime I was supposed to, etc. |

If a company doesn't offer direct deposit at any time you wish, they're plain ass backwards. If I didn't have direct deposit I'd bounce checks left and right due to the fact that I'd avoid going to the bank. And sometimes if you deposit a check after 3:00 p.m. it won't post until the next businees day at 12:00 p.m.
That's a major pain in the ass. ZIIIIING! Even standing in line on a Friday at the ATM blows. It's the end of the week, you want to get home, and traffic's getting worse by the second. F that. |

Yeah, I sold my soul for direct deposit. It's great. Especially since my employer has switched to this insanely convoluted pay scheme. I used to get paid every other Friday. Salary and overtime. Now I get salary on the 15th and last day of the month. With overtime every other week or so. So now I get twice as many checks and because my gross pay on each check is lower, I stay in a lower tax bracket. This crazy scheme is great. I take home about 20% more loot because of it.

Call me bass-ackwards, but I like getting a check. I have to get cash anyway, so making a deposit is no real hassle. I'm not in a hurry to make the deposit, either, since I budget a month or two in advance (haven't bounced a check since I was a poor student).
I just don't like giving employers and third party companies any sort of access to my checking account . -Mike... |

Will that really work, though? I mean, won't you just owe more in taxes at the end of the year when they see how much you really made? not that there's anything wrong with that, since you got the value of the money, and possibly interest in the meantime. Cool. Wow, I thinkthat fundy company is truly crazy. I'd be pissed off if my company didn't do direct deposit. We don't even do paystubs anymore, which I think is great. We save tons of paper, I am sure, what with 11,000 employees. We have an intranet from which we can view our paystubs. Some people print them out of course, but I just view mine and save it as a pdf file on a disk. |

You think those quotes are scary? Check this out!
Revelation 13:17 so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the checking account, which is the method of the beast used to deposit pay directly. |

I hate direct deposit. I like to have my check in my hand, and decide how I will divy it up among cash, checking and saving. Unfortunately, I have to have direct deposit--I was hired after a certain deadline and that is all they will do now. No option for me.

Speaking of bar codes, I once had a job where I generated tons of barcodes that I put on direct mail cupons. Please forgive me lord for leading countless souls astray.

My employer not only offers direct deposit, but allows me to split my paycheck into any number of direct deposit accounts! And, I can make changes to the distributions any time I want (takes about 3 weeks to take effect)! What do you think that means??
I don't know what's involved between the company and the bank, but I know that many small companies do not offer direct deposit because of the hassle of the paperwork involved. Maybe there's a fee to the employer? I'm not sure. Here in NJ, First Union (now Wachovia) offers fee-free checking if direct deposit of payroll checks is involved. Cydonia, if your company is big enough, and you could check around to see if local banks offer something similar to fee-free checking w/direct deposit, then I think you and your co-workers would have a valid argument to make in support of direct deposit. Their refusal to offer it is costing you, their employee, money. Unless their justification for refusing is financial, that's a bad faith business practice. Mrs. Heathen |
