the hare krishnas here in the philippines make ok food, but their sweets are excellent.
their regular food is only ok because they are not allowed to put spices like chillies, onions, garlic, etc in their food, so it isnt good like proper indian cooking. |

Atleast where I live (washington, dc) they seem to make great food inspite of their dietary restrictions (and I know how food tastes when I eat it).

Hi,
I'm this is my first post to this forum. I was born a hindu but eschewed all manner of religious trappings way back in college. It's been twenty years now and I don't regret my decision one bit. Anyhow, the Hare Krishnas as they are more popularly known are members of an organisation called ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness). It was begun by a Swami Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada. I guess it could be regarded as a cult, but not as kooky as some others. There have been pretty morbid scandals involving internal power struggles and also a quite recent case of child abuse. There seems to be a renewal in their activity in India of late. They target the wealthier sections for following, conduct summer courses for children (knowing of their history I wouldn't send my son anywhere near them) in yoga and vedas. I don't know of their cooking but personally I am a spice and meat man so I would probably find their food rather bland. Anyhow for an organisation that puts so much weight on celibacy, their literature seems to be strewn with sex... descriptions the amorous meetings of Radha and Krishna form a major portion of their literature. Here is a link to their official site...ISKCON also a google page of ISKCON news... GOOGLE |

roshan,
I did not say they did. I wasn't there. I said that the literature that the IKSCON people distributed had an abundance of pretty tittlilating descriptions of the amorous meetings between Radha and Krishna. I am quite sure they didn't, because the existence of these two figures as we know them now is itself highly suspect. Besides if they did I think both adultery ('traditionally' Radha is supposed to be already married) and pedophilia ('traditionally' she is much older to him) would be issues. But I think in the mythic landscape they belong to these would not be issues. |

Once, a few years back, at my local health center, I was washing off the chlorine from the outside pool in the little whirlpool in the female locker-room, when this young girl from India and her baby cousin hopped in the whirlpool with me. Being a nosy, curious teenager, I immediately engaged the Indian girl in conversation (she was visiting relatives here, and her English was very good!) and discovered she worshipped Krishna. I thought this rather interesting, as I had never met a Hare Krishna before, and found her to be a sweet girl. We laughed and giggled and blew bubbles at her baby cousin, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, but that was as deep as the theological discussion went.

Nichol,
Actually a person who worships Krishna need not be a Hare Krishna. Krishna forms part of the Indian pantheon an is considered a worldly incarnation of Vishnu, one of the Indian trinity. Certain anthropologists are of the view that he was probably a pre-Aryan pastoral fertility deity later assimilated into the Aryan religion. Ofcourse there are those who believe that the Aryan migration never took place and since we have no absolute proof on this I shall refrain from making my comments. But I digress, what I wanted to say that though all Hare Krishnas are Krishna worshipers, it is not essentially true the other way round. ISKCON seems to have been packeged for the West. |
