Atheism does not in and of itself entail active disbelief which is a metaphysical and largely untenable position. While active disbelief is not contradictory to atheism it is not a requirement and to equate the two is to misunderstand atheism and misuse the word "atheism". Atheism entails only an absence of belief. The statements "I do not believe in a god" and "I believe god does not exist" are entirely different. The former is atheism and the latter is something else. As an analogy, amorality is the absence of morality. It is not equivalent to immorality. Unfortunately there is no convenient term for active disbelief in god perhaps it should be antheism. Two choices is simply insufficient to describe the spectrum of belief, disbelief and nonbelief.
