Thanks to one of the IIDB regulars, I sort of do - I'm writing a book! However, writing is the kind of work that involves a lot of fidgeting time, so I chatter around here.

Not many pictures, actually. It's an expansion on the material from my Cranky User column - run sporadically at IBM developerWorks for the last year or two. I'm doing a full book on it. Whee!

I teach statistics and research design. That usually ends the conversation right there....

I just moved to Tallahassee last august and so far I like it alot. And I have learned that I am supposed to hate the Gators. Especially during football season.

One of the worst mistakes of my college career involved statistics. I took a non-honors statistics course; this meant they wouldn't *touch* the theory, and I nearly failed the class, until I finally sat down and figured out where all the stuff came from. I'm a theory person.

Statistics is just one of those courses where it seems that different people learn differently. Luckily, I teach it at the graduate level and I get a chance to teach both the theory and the application. but I wol think that you would need at least a little theory, or you would have nothing to "hang your hat on". It doesn't halp to be able to do the applications if you don't know WHY you are doing it....

For me, I can't learn anything if I don't understand the derivation. I just can't. I have to be able to see how it goes together... but then I don't need to memorize formulae, because I can just recreate them.

My parents were both mathematicians.
