Of course, it isn't just the Americans that make fun of the French. Every country in Europe does as well.
OK, what does my location have to do with anything?

Yea, I know the French are pompous and are not very well liked in most countries. My post was an attempt to explain possible reasons for this in the US.

I have sent a letter to the French news media to thank them for helping to block an invasion of Iraq. The biggest joke around is in the White House.

I don't know about your location, but I'm still looking for some explanation as to how the Germans were so helpful during the Revolutionary War.

Or explaining how Britain, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, and Italy are among the poorest nations in Europe.

Yeah. Must be annoying for you to be completely out of power. No white house. No senate. Ho house. No supreme court.

But so long as you have the French Government to look up to, I guess hope springs eternal.

Well, you are minimizing what happened. They had a bigger army than Hitler. More tanks. Better tanks. Yet they surrendered shortly after Hitler invaded. And with substantial forces and more than 3/4ths of their country left.
The were better prepared for another WWI, Hitler surprised them by inventing blitzkriek. The Maginot line was completely useless at stopping fast moving German forces. So they lost very easily because they didn't make the right tactical bets, not because they were cowards. As for 3/4 of their country unoccupied, that's a mystery to me too.

The Poles defended Warsaw itself for days, the French had no such compunction. They even surrendered their colonies to the Germans and were going to let Hitler use their navy.

I would not say personal cowardice is a justified label, but they sure were quick to surrender and collaborate.

Do you know ExTheist personally, or is this just your concession that all the major branches of government in the US are now dominated by Christian theocrats?

I'm a naturalized American citizen, born and raised in France. I own a catering company called Simply French and people can tell I am from France. I haven't noticed any difference in the way people treat me. They love the food and they love to dream about going on vacation over there, most of them won't shut up and let me do my work and it's nothing but warm conversations! Business is booming in many ways. The fact that Jay Leno cracks jokes is not news to me, he'll poke fun at anything and he's pretty funny too. The problem as I see it is that the Bush Administration can't stand anyone disagreeing with them. And anyone who dares dissagree is labeled "irrelevant." The American people as a whole have nothing against the French, and vice versa. Once Bush goes back to Texas, things will calm down and Leno will find someone else to make fun of.

I'm curious Layman, just what is the point of this thread? Do you really think that ad hominem attacks against the French actually do something to undermine their anti-war sentiments? What, do you believe that the 70-90% of Europeans who are oppposed to war are all a bunch of "cheese eatin' surrender monkeys" too? The problem for the war hawks is much, much bigger than France.

Oh, but the British Expeditionary Force....now there was a sucessful defender of France.

Boy, why were they so quick to abandon Paris? Why did they foolishly let themselves get surrounded and cut-off? But the UK (or more specifically, Blair) supports America's war-mongering, which means they must be good!

Anyone got any good Catholic jokes?
