Adrian:
So, do you view 'information' as 'data stored in a consciousness'? The 'stuff' (whether we call it 'data' or 'information' is irrelevant, IMO) in books, on computers, etc., isn't usable until a consciousness has perceived and processed it. Is that your position? If so, we agree as to that, but disagree about how important the terminology is... You didn't ask me, but I want to address the 'origin' thing. Whether you believe that existence was 'created' by 'God', or 'created' by something other than 'God', for existence to have been 'created', something would have to 'exist' prior to existence. I have big problems with this. If one can believe in an eternal (uncreated) 'God', it's far more efficient to believe that reality (existence) itself is eternal; uncreated. So that is what I believe. I don't think the terms are interchangeable, but as you say, we have to agree to disagree. My only concern would be of course that the use of the term 'information' might get misconstrued were we thinking of different kinds of thing when seeing the term used.
But yes, we do seem in agreement. There is data in consciousness, or in a database or wherever, but what of it you call information is a process of describing the use or intended use or understanding of all or aspects of that data. |
