I have that magazine somewhere around here.... maybe, if it didn't get thrown out in my last move. The house my sister bought a couple years ago has a bomb shelter built in between the kitchen and garage with three foot thick concrete walls and roof, air exchanger, and plumbing for water and septic. Makes a great tornado shelter and/or darkroom. I like to use it for a guest room, dark, cool and quiet... very quiet when both steel doors are shut.

I too remember crawling under my school desk during the atomic bomb drills. As if that would be of any assistance, considering I grew up only a few short miles from the Pantex plant where nuclear warheads are assembled. Might as well have painted a big bullseye on the whole area.

Another old geezer here. I recall a few three gallon bottles of water and a cabinet with cans of spaghetti, peas and corn, which were in my parent's basement.

Yessir, we were ready to survive an atomic attack by the Russkies!

Thing is, I never recall a can opener anywhere in the basement. Good thing that Krushchev or Brezhnev never pushed the button.

If you got hungry enough, you'd figure out how to get those cans open; might be hell on the teeth and fingernails though.

Exactly why red blooded Americans should always keep a decent knife on their person. Not that I'd trust anyone who admitted to having red blood.

Last I checked, my blood was [gasp] RED!

The Swiss Army(TM) knife I always* carry is [gasp] RED!
*I haven't flown on commercial air carrier since September 2001 (actually July 2000 is more accurate).

I own a couple of T-Shirts that were made in [gasp] RUSSIA and a whole bunch of cheap Wal-Mart crap made in [gasp] CHINA!

I haven't been 100% supportive of Bush&Co's "war" on Iraq, nor The Patriot Act.

Aaaarrgghh! I think I'm a Commie! Should I turn myself in to the nearest Homeland Security Ministry Office? Or, will someone here take care of that for me?
