Personally I quite like Eminem. I know nothing of the man, and have never seen a single interview he's given, but I like his music, some of it. All the stuff of his I've got was downloaded from the net (I know, I know), and I have run across a few songs I disliked, but I liked quite a few of them. I like the lyricism

Its a bit embarrassing to like Eminem, though, it always makes me think of posturing 13year old boys, to be honest

It was always about the industry. If you follow his career from when he released 'My Name Is' as a promotion for the artist and it got his name out. Coupled with controversial lyrics and satire of various famous figures (Bill Clinton, the Spice Girls) he set the precedent for his future clips with 'My Name Is'. Only with the sucess of this song was the radio convinced to air his subsequent songs in which things got even more controversial lyrically, that is, his career really began. I generally enjoy his first album at times, but agree that he is overexposed and has exhausted his best material. He is in a position where he can work with the best producers and, if music industry history repeats itself, what goes up must come down and from the decending quality of his work of late, I believe Eminem is on his slow, but gradual decline.
