Hopefully, someone can enlighten me.
I have noticed on this forum and many others as well that there is a substantial amount of attention devoted to the topic of Jews, Semitism, Anti-Semitism. Actually, in general, even outside of this forum, this topic garners a great deal of attention. My question is why? Why is this such a popular topic? Why do so many people show such keen interest in this subject? |

I think you find these topics in political forums because of the view that US/Isreal relations are a major cause of anti-American activisim in the ME.
Another reason would be the opinion that Isreal is a brutal regime that persecutes Palestinians and violates UN and human rights organizations with full support of US administrations. Anti-Semitism and criticism of Isreal are not the same thing. i can openly criticize Isreal without being anti-Jew just as I can criticize the Bush admin without being anti-US. The right and the Isreali govt like to characterize critics as anti-Semites because it is polarizing and puts the critics on the defensive. |

The Jewish religion is discussed in a different manner than other religions on this religiously natured board because of the past persecutions and the political nature of Israel and its US backing. When Judaism is mentioned, I tend to think of politics or group definition instead of religion.
There would be more discussion and debate about the Jewish religion in particular if the Jews behaved and affected others in a similar manner as the Christian religions. |
