Hypatia was killed because she was not a Christian and did not want to. Here was a highly visible (influencial), admired and intellectual person who would not convert. She had to die for this reason. Hypatia died around 415 CE if my memory is good. Here is Emperor Constantine's edict almost a century before. "O ye enemies of truth, authors and counsellors of death -- we enact by this law that none of you dare hereafter to meet at your conventicles ... nor keep any meetings either in public buildings or private houses. We have commanded that all your places of meeting -- your temples -- be pulled down or confiscated to the Catholic Church." Freedom of thought??? freedom of assembly??? They apologized! What a farce! This was part of a systematic suppression of all opposition to the faith. How can you possibly be so blind? That's what I call the Dark ages. You can officially start it whenver you want and it does not really matter much. "let them eat cake" There was a time when we all thought that communism could take over the world. We have fought this menace with whatever was necessary. Christianity was a similar menace back in the fourth century. What started as a pious religious bunch with a ideal ended up creating an oppressive organization which silenced one and all. [ October 01, 2002: Message edited by: NOGO ]</p> |

It is fun to imagine what would have happened to Metacrock if he had lived back in the times he celebrates. He would likely have been put on trial for heresy, and perhaps even burned at the stake.

Radorth, a question:
Why WAIT so long before sending Christ down? If it was God's plan from the begining to produce a Saviour why not bring him out immediately after banishing Adam and Eve? that way so much misery would have been averted and you would not have to put up with infidels. To expand on Hinduwoman's question, why not just have Jesus meet Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and tell them not to eat the apple? It seems that a prescient God could have saved a lot of trouble if He'd done it that way.

Meta=> Oddly enough, you seem to imply that being killed in a church means that pagans weren't really killing christians? flyuing her with shells; this is what pagans were doing to christians for weeks before they did it to her. NOw that doesn't justify that they did it, but it explians why. They were pissed! they had enough! but yea sure they apologized AND TURNED THEMSELVES IN!!!! How conviently we ignore that little part. They haded themselves over to be killed! You wouldn't do that. Hypatia was killed because she was not a Christian and did not want to. Here was a highly visible (influencial), admired and intellectual person who would not convert. She had to die for this reason. Hypatia died around 415 CE if my memory is good. Meta => You are reading into their motivations what you want to be there. The accounts of the event (which are slightly more historical than your mere opinon) say that it was becasue she made flip comments which were taken to fuel the torture of christians. Quote:
Meta => Ok and this is suppossed to prove that Christians caused the middle ages? Some streach of the old imagination! Freedom of thought??? freedom of assembly??? Meta => right, you expect people living before the middle ages to understand modern enlightenment principles of the U.S. constitution? Man have you even been in a history class? Are you even aware of the fact that people think differently in different time periods? What a distorted sense of history. They apologized! What a farce! Meta -> let's not forget the part about tuning themselves in to die! Ok? Can we try to focuss now? Quote:
Meta => Don't confuse me with the facts, I have my own reading of hisory, right? Systematic suppression? That's absurd. The Christians weren't even in power at that time. You know nothing about history. It happened during a time of pagan persecution of the chruch. Ok tell me when she died? what year was it? Quote:
Meta => You know nothing about history! Come on go back to junior high! Take some history classes! My god what a shallow understanding! Christianity built western civilization. IT's as simple as that. It made democracy. Modern principles of democracy, yea started with the Greeks, big deal. The Greeks did nothing with it, they evne had slaves and women couldn't vote and poor people vote. It was christians who took it made it into the modern version of democratic rights we know today. the first women's sufferage group in America, first abolition of slavery group in America, all ran by christians. The civil rights movement, totally christian (ever hear of Reverand Martion Luther King? ever wonder why they call him "rev?") [ October 01, 2002: Message edited by: NOGO ][/QB][/QUOTE] |

Ok let's see your math skills aren't much better than historical knowledge. She died in 415, and your quote says DA's began in 479. Gee it sure looks to me like it wasn't in the dark ages. Besides, I'm not impressed by dictionaries. you should never use a general knowledge standard dictionary when dealing with a speicialized academic subject. And never argue with historians when you don't know history. |

Now I think it had to do with the historical situation. Rome provided a universal langauge, travel to most parts of the world (minus Western hemesphere) and relative peace. Being in the ancient world faith was easier to come by, which might explian why he didn't do it today. But that all assumes that we know and understand the exact peramitors of God's workings, which we don't. |
